Charles Welcomes the Graham Expeditionary Middle School

The Charles School is welcoming the Graham Expeditionary Middle School (GEMS) to the Brentnell building for the 2010 – 2011 academic year.  GEMS is a 6th – 8th grade experiential education program that is being started by the founders of The Graham School and The Charles School.  Its innovative curriculum design is the first in the state of Ohio and we are excited to hear of their successes in educating central Ohio middle school students.  As you can imagine, starting a school has many hurdles to overcome, not least of which is location.  GEMS staff and administration has been working hard in order to find the best possible location for their first year as a school.  The administrations of TCS, GEMS, and The Graham Family of Schools have consulted and determined that the Brentnell building brings many opportunities for both programs.

GEMS students and staff will be housed in the south wing of the building, will have a separate entrance, and its own front desk.  Additionally, they will have separate hours of operations, lunches, and restrooms.  It will require that TCS students and staff work hard to be welcoming and mindful that there will be some changes in room locations for the 2010-2011 academic year only.  The GEMS administration is actively seeking its permanent location where it can impact children’s lives long into the future.  We are pleased to help them get their start as a school.

Exposures to lead in doses much smaller than previously thought represent a definable risk to children’s health and ability to learn.

The Charles School will attempt to control the use and maintenance of lead-bearing building products and avoid use of any educational or maintenance procedures or products which may create lead exposures.

Sixteen year old Abdiaziz Amin has already found a skill that will take him soaring through the future. At a tender age, Amin discovered his talent for soccer and has been taking steps to perfect his talent ever since. “I play because I’m passionate about soccer. I feel that I have a gift. By being active and playing 24/7, it betters my skills and it keeps me fit and healthy,” says Amin.  His love for soccer is conveyed in his passionate words and his persistent, eminent smile.

Earlier this fall, our school received the 2008 - 2009 Local Report Card from the Ohio Department of Education.  This is our first building report card and is compiled using Ohio Graduation Test results from last year's sophomore students.  We are very pleased to have earned a rating of 'Effective' from the state of Ohio and we are thrilled with the success that our students have achieved.
