Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Tell me about your program…
A: The Charles School is a five year, early college high school. Our students spend the first two years taking just high school classes in our building. Starting their third year, if they have met all of our requirements then they can begin taking their first college courses at Ohio Dominican University. By the end of their 5 years, they can graduate with a high school diploma and up to 62 credit hours from Ohio Dominican or an associate’s degree. In order for students to graduate from Charles they must have at least 12 hours from ODU (3 classes) to even get their high school diploma.

Q: Do you have uniforms?
A: No.

Q: Are your teachers certified?
A: Yes. We report to the Ohio Department of Education just like your home public school about our teacher’s certifications and many of our teachers hold their Master’s degrees.

Q: What is your School Day?
A: 7:30AM - 2:30PM. Our building opens every morning at 7AM and closes at 3PM.

Q: Do you provide busing?
A: If you live in the Columbus Public School district than you are eligible for bussing just like you would be attending any other public school. Once you are enrolled, you will receive a bus application to fill out and return to the school. If you are outside of CPS you will not receive bussing but we can put you in contact with other families from your area if you are interested in carpooling. Please contact Kyle Jepson <> to find out more information about carpooling.

Q: Who is eligible to attend The Charles School?

Q: Why is there an Interview?
A: We require an interview of every student who wants to attend. We want to get to know each family on a individual level, we are a public school, but we are not a typical high school, so we want to explain the program to you more in depth and make sure you understand the expectations.

Q: Can I visit the The Charles School?
A: We welcome students and families applying to The Charles School to visit our school during the scheduled Enrollment Information Sessions. Click here for upcoming Enrollment Information Sessions.

Q: Will I still be able to apply if I don't attend an Enrollment Information Session?
A: Yes. You are not required to attend an Enrollment Information Session before setting up your Information Interview. Please email Tim Nunn to set up your Information Interview time.

Q: Do you have a lunch program?
A: Yes, we have a lunch program; you can apply for free or reduced lunches.

Q: Do you have a breakfast program?
A: No, not at this point, but we are planning on having one within the next year or so.

Q: Do you accept students on an IEP?
A: Yes. We have an intervention specialist on staff to work with our IEP students. We would ask that you bring a copy of your students IEP and MFE/ETR to your interview and we will have that reviewed by our intervention specialist to make sure that we have all of the accommodations in place that your student needs.

Q: How can get I get more information on The Charles School if I don’t have a chance to visit the school?
