GATEWAY I

The purpose of Gateway I is to assess a student’s acclimation to the demands of the learning environment at The Charles School. This Gateway will be assessed by the student and his or her advisor, and promotion will be verified by the Dean of Academics.

COMMITMENT

Student has attended school on time every day in accordance to the state standard of 95%.

• The percentage is based on the attendance rate over the 45 school days immediately preceding the date that this Gateway would be assessed.
• This benchmark is passive. Artifacts* regarding this benchmark are provided by the school office.

CITIZENSHIP

Student has not been suspended or removed from the educational environment for disruptive conduct.

• This is assessed over the 45 school days immediately preceding the date that the Gateway would be assessed.
• This benchmark is passive. Artifacts regarding this benchmark are provided by the school office.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Student is earning a passing grade in all coursework at the time of the Gateway Assessment.

• A passing grade is a C- or better.
• The most recent grade report is used to make this determination. The most recent quarter’s performance is considered for this benchmark.
• Coursework includes all core subject matter, advisory group, experiential grades, and electives. In short, coursework includes anything for which a student would be awarded a grade.
• This benchmark is passive. Artifacts regarding this benchmark are provided by the school office.

INTENTIONALITY

Student has prepared an electronic Personal Learning Plan.

• This benchmark is active. The student must generate and submit the artifact for assessment.

GATEWAY II

The purpose of Gateway II is to assess a student’s readiness for the second year of study at The Charles School. This Gateway will be assessed in an individual interview with the student and a Charles School staff member, and promotion will be verified by the Dean of Academics.

• When a student attends a college readiness event planned by The Charles School, he or she will be issued a card signifying that attendance.
• This benchmark is active. The student must submit the artifact in order to meet this requirement.

READINESS

Student has taken a practice test in each section of the Ohio Graduation Test.

• In the event that the student is not present when one or more practice test is administered, the student must consult the Dean of Academics to arrange the administration of those sections.
• This benchmark is passive. The student will take the practice tests as a matter of course in attending school, and a record of having done so will be maintained and provided by the office.

GATEWAY III

The purpose of Gateway III is to assess a student’s progress during the second year of study at The Charles School. This Gateway will be assessed by the student and his or her advisor, and promotion will be verified by the Dean of Academics.

• This benchmark is active. The student must generate and submit the artifact for assessment.

LIFELONG LEARNING

Student independently reads at least one book.

• The Lexile score of the book should fall within the student’s Lexile range.
• A parent or guardian must explicity consent to the book that will qualify for this requirement.
• This benchmark is active.

SELF-ADVOCACY

Student has requested and obtained a written character reference from someone other than a staff member at The Charles School.

• This benchmark is active. The student must submit the artifact in order to meet this requirement.

GATEWAY IV

The purpose of Gateway IV is to assess a student’s readiness in progressing toward taking college level courses at Ohio Dominican University. This Gateway will be assessed by the student and his or her advisor. This assessment will include a presentation, by the student to the advisor, but not limited to the advisor, justifying promotion. Promotion will be verified by the Dean of Academics.

• The specific guidelines for the major project presentation should be developed in the plan.
• This benchmark is active. The student must generate and present all aspects and artifacts commensurate with the fulfillment of this benchmark.

 LIFELONG LEARNING

Student reads at least one Recommended Book.

• The Recommended Book List is maintained by the English Department.
• This benchmark is active.

SELF-ADVOCACY

Student has written a Statement of Intent, summarizing his or her educational interests, and reasons for wanting to attend classes at Ohio Dominican University.

• This benchmark is active. The student must submit the artifact in order to meet this requirement.

READINESS

Student has taken each section of the Ohio Graduation Test.

• This benchmark is passive. The student will take the tests as a matter of course in attending school, and a record of having done so will be maintained and provided by the office.

READINESS

Student has completed the Academic Success Center Ohio Graduation Test Preparation Curriculum.

• This benchmark is passive. The student will complete this aspect of the curriculum as a matter of course in attending school, and a record of having done so will be maintained and provided by the office.

READINESS

Student has had an Official Transition Planning Conference to discuss the transition process.

• When a student arranges and attends his or her transition conference, he or she will be issued a card signifying that attendance.
• This benchmark is active.

READINESS

Student has attended a College Kickoff Event.

• When a student completes the consultation, he or she will be issued a card signifying that attendance.
• This benchmark is active. The student must submit the artifact in order to meet this requirement.

GATEWAY V

The purpose of Gateway V is to assess a student’s readiness to begin taking courses at Ohio Dominican University. The completion of Gateway V is considered a sufficient condition for readiness, subject to review by the Early College Dean.

• Student has demonstrated proficiency in each section of the Ohio Graduation Test.
