Hello and Welcome to The Charles School Summer Reading Program!
Every year, school ends and we release you into the wilds of summer. Three months later, we round you all up and start school all over again, beginning with our annual Writing and Thinking Workshop. This summer, we are going to do things a bit differently. We are sending you into your summer with an adventure story that will be the foundation of the Writing and Thinking Workshop.
Around The World In 80 Days, written by Jules Verne, is an exciting story of the adventures of a man who tries to make good his dream of travelling around our entire globe in only 80 days. Of course, with enough money, he could make the trip in a matter of days now. But back in 1873, when the book was first published, the task was as amazing as a trip to Mars would be today. Throughout the story, he encounters strange lands, interesting people, and a lot of setbacks; however, he also encounters himself and learns what it means to persevere to obtain a dream.
So, your job this summer will be to take this journey with him by reading the book and thinking about adventures you’d like to take some day, dreams you’d like to make real, and what it takes to be successful. Do some reflection after you have read the story; there are two writing prompts to complete to help you. Then, be ready the first day of school to discuss the book and adventures you’ve taken and would like to take, take journeys throughout Columbus and the surrounding areas during the week, and the present your findings with the rest of the community.
Written responses and presentations will be graded, and there will be other assignments throughout the week that will impact your work in all areas: English, math, science, social studies, art, and so forth. Who knows? Around The World in 80 Days may become the launching pad for other work throughout the school year.
So read, mark, think, write, and be ready for the adventure that the 2012-13 school year will bring!
To Infinity…And Beyond!
